As in the rest of the Europe, the fall of the Iron Curtain has had major consequences for armed forces in the Balkans. Albania is a haven for the aviation enthusiast, both for its natural splendor, as well as for the many stored military aircraft of Chinese ascendancy. The commander of the Albanian Air Force kindly facilitated visits to all of the airbases, in order to view the predominately silver fighter aircraft of yesteryear. 2007 will see quite a number of these aircraft being scrapped, as the aircraft have long outlasted their usefulness. Although small, the Albanian Air Force is a professional outfit, and after years of virtual inactivity, are now well on its way to join NATO. The country being of strategic importance, Albania is set to be a valued member of NATO within the foreseeable future.

The former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia proclaimed its independence on 8 September 1991, without a shot being fired. The bloody Balkan wars have largely bypassed Macedonia fortunately, enabling the country to slowly but steadily develop its small but potent Air Force. A valued member during Partnership for Peace excercises, and contributing heavily to the IFOR mission in Bosnia, Macedonia’s contributions to peace and stability in Europe are valued internationally. Hampered by budgetary constraints, as elsewhere in Europe, Macedonia yet maintains the means to safeguard its independence. As in Albania, the Macedonian Armed Forces kindly enabled us to examine the inventory, and sample the professionalism of its men and women.

Please enjoy these images of all the types of aircraft of both the Albanian, as well as the Macedonian armed forces. A warm thank you to all persons involved in enabling these visits, and on behalf of AviationVideo we wish both the Albanian, as well as the Macedonian people peace and prosperity.
